Deion Sanders Is SI’s 2023 Sportsperson of the Year

Deion Sanders Is SI’s 2023 Sportsperson of the Year

In less than a year, Coach Prime has not only transformed a moribund Colorado football program. He’s also breathed fresh life into the campus and transformed a community.

In this story:

Prime accepts SI Sportsperson of the Year

COLORADO BUFFALOES

The photo shoot was progressing the way they often do, becoming a war of wills pitting the perfectionists with the cameras and the lighting and the smoke machine against the impatient subjects arrayed in front of them. Between poses, Deion Sanders was getting fidgety.

The coach of Colorado was surrounded by his people: His agent, the school’s chancellor and athletic director, and 99-year-old superfan Peggy Coppom were among the entourage. As the photo crew pored over details, Sanders lobbed one-liners at his sons—social media maven Deion Jr., Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur and safety Shilo. He wrapped his arm around his daughter, Colorado basketball player Shelomi, kissing her on the temple. He bent over to speak so tiny Peggy could hear him. (Peggy is Deion’s match in terms of personality. “I thought I was coming for the Swimsuit edition,” she said.)

But eventually, this shoot at Folsom Field needed to wrap so Coach Prime could get back to coaching. “We’re doing one more shot,” he said, light but firm. “Let’s go.”

One more shot turned into two, with a change of backdrop. Sanders paced between shutter clicks and strobe flashes, talking ball with a visitor, fretting about the tight turnaround for a Friday road game. At that point the Buffaloes were 4–6 and had lost four straight in a rugged Pac-12, three of them by one score, two of them at the very end.

“The Oregon game, I’ve forgotten it,” Sanders said of his team’s lone blowout to that point. “I’ve moved past it. The others stay with me. Three points, seven points—details, consistency. We want to win now.”

Then the photo crew called Sanders to his mark, a square of black tape on the ground where he was to stand with about 100 students roaring behind him. Sanders hit the mark, struck the requested pose; it was glow time. Shades on, diamond-and-gold whistle gleaming around his neck, the Duke of Drip unveiled one of humankind’s most luminous smiles.

Coach Prime lit up on command, as few others can, and his work was done. In a larger sense, his paradigm-shifting, precedent-shattering work—in Colorado and in college football—might be just beginning.

There are numbers that define the Prime Effect upon the University of Colorado in Boulder, a place that hasn’t always had a chummy relationship with football. First-year applications are up 26.4% year over year; Black or African American applications are up 80.6%; nonresident applications are up 29.8%; and international applications are up 38.4% from 97 countries, including 16 that didn’t have any applications last year. While those numbers cannot be definitively linked to Sanders, others can be: September sales at the school’s online team store were up 2,544% over the same month in 2022. Every home game in 50,183-seat Folsom Field was sold out for the first time in school history.

Order the SI 2023 Sportsperson of the Year issue here.

“It has that 1990s energy all over again,” says Mark Heinritz, co-owner of The Sink, a bar within a 10-minute walk of Folsom Field. “There were a lot of discussions over a couple decades of, ‘Why do we have football?’ This is why we have football.” There are numbers that define the Prime Effect on Boulder, a quirky, affluent and extremely white city of 108,000 that is picturesquely situated northwest of Denver at the foot of the Rocky Mountains. Visit Boulder, the convention and visitors bureau, calculates that the total economic impact of the first four home games—where attendance was up by nearly a third over last year—was an estimated $77.8 million, a massive jump from 2022. “Boulder felt kind of beaten up, or beaten down, through the pandemic,” says city council member Rachel Friend. “Our potholes haven’t been filled as readily, we can’t figure out how to get unhoused people what they need and we’ve had a notable increase in that population. There is a cash infusion [from football into the economy] that means more potholes are going to be filled. People living here and visiting here are going to be taken care of better.”

And there are numbers that help define the Prime Effect on college football: The previously irrelevant Buffs had the most-watched game of the season through the first 11 weeks, as 10.03 million viewers tuned in for the Sept. 23 loss to Oregon. In fact, Colorado has had five of the 13 most-watched games; Alabama had three of the top 13 to that point, while Ohio State, Texas, Penn State and LSU each had two. So, yes, the numbers are huge and paint a vivid portrait of renewal—but they don’t fully explain why Sanders is our 2023 Sportsperson of the Year. The human stories run deeper, and not just the celebrities and athletes flocking to the sidelines of games, but also the grassroots stories as the Prime Effect transcends sports and ripples outward through the culture.

In the Colorado chancellor’s office, a delighted smile spreads across the face of 77-year-old Phil DiStefano as he tells a story from earlier this year. One of the school’s five Nobel laureates was recruiting a nationally acclaimed scientist from California to join the faculty. The laureate wanted to set up a campus visit to interview, and the chemist agreed on one condition: She wanted to meet Deion Sanders. “He met with her for 45 minutes,” DiStefano says. “On her way out he said, ‘Here’s my telephone number, and give me yours. I call all my recruits after they visit.’”

Ultimately, Sanders and Colorado lost that recruit to MIT, which is like losing a five-star football prospect to Alabama—it happens. But the chair of the biochemistry department was so taken by the allure of Sanders and his willingness to help the school academically that he emailed DiStefano something not often articulated by Boulder faculty: “Phil, we love football.”

On another part of campus, professor Reiland Rabaka is exulting over Coach Prime. Rabaka is founder and director of the school’s Center for African and African American Studies. The center had its grand opening on Feb. 1, and Rabaka harbored hopes that Sanders might attend. But then he found out that it was also the late National Signing Day, one of the high holy days on the football calendar. “I wasn’t expecting the brother,” Rabaka says. “I felt like it was an imposition to ask. When he walked through the door, it was pure pandemonium. It was like Moses parting the Red Sea and coming to me. When I embraced him, it was like two brothers from the projects meeting here—in Boulder. I’ve been out here in Boulder for 20 years waiting on this brother.”

At The Sophomore, a newly opened, locally owned sports bar, an eclectic group of civic leaders gathered for lunch in mid-November and wound up heaping hosannas on Coach Prime. “There is a hum in this town I haven’t seen in my 23 years here,” said city council member Matt Benjamin, a Colorado graduate and season-ticket holder. “It’s just infectious. People who know nothing about college football are talking about Coach Prime, talking about the CU Buffs. He’s bringing people in who were peripheral before.”

Lance Carl, a former football player at Colorado who is now the program’s director of player development and alumni relations: “I met a guy after one game from Dallas who had never been to a game here but wanted to see what it was all about with Deion. He wasn’t a rapper, wasn’t a celebrity—he was a Black businessman who just wanted to be here.”

Annett James, president of the Boulder County branch of the NAACP and a 43-year resident: “I think he’s the best thing that’s happened to Boulder since I’ve lived here, by far. The stuff I’ve been doing over 40 years, Deion comes in and does in six months.” James describes attending a campus function with a friend one Friday night before a home game, then going to the nearby Embassy Suites for a nightcap. “We walked in, and there’s like 30 Black people. My friend said, ‘Oh my God, I’ve never seen that many Black people at a bar in Boulder!’ We started talking to people, and there were some who said they came here from Atlanta for Prime. I think the Black people who live here also have more of a sense of community—not that we didn’t have community before, but we feel free to be more above-ground.”

“At the risk of sounding cocky, I’ve always been Prime,” says Deion Sanders, and that’s a risk he’s been willing to take his entire life. He’s bragged—and backed it up—since childhood. The headline on the first of six previous Sports Illustrated cover stories on Sanders, in November 1989, came from one of his quotes in the piece: they don’t pay nobody to be humble.

He was a bombastic young man then, a rising two-sport professional star who would become a Pro Football Hall of Famer and Super Bowl champion and also play in the World Series, hitting .533 with five stolen bases for the Braves in 1992 against Toronto.

He’s a slightly less bombastic 56-year-old man now, still pretty much the same guy he’s always been, in a world that is more willing to embrace him as he is. Coach Prime didn’t evolve to fit the role of college football coach nearly as much as college football evolved to meet up with Coach Prime.

On this November afternoon, Sanders is sitting in his office overlooking Folsom Field with a view of the Rockies, which had received a fresh coating of snow the day before. He’s wearing black overalls and a white hoodie. His Belgian Malinois dog, Gunner, is over by the window. (That’s very Boulder, taking the dog to work.) Behind him is a sign that reads:

IF YOU LOOK GOOD

YOU PLAY GOOD

IF YOU PLAY GOOD

THEY PAY GOOD

There is assuredly no other college football coach in America with a sign like that greeting visitors, but it perfectly fits the modern reality of the sport. The days of pretending this isn’t a business are over. College football has never been more about the money than it is now, from conference-realignment decisions based on TV revenue to massive coaching salaries and shameless buyouts. Now it has finally trickled down to the players, who have been liberated to be paid good if they play good.

The NCAA’s name, image and likeness rules went into effect in the summer of 2021, a landscape-altering development that the establishment had heavily resisted for decades. NIL and the transfer portal were prophesied as disasters by the Cassandras in college football; in reality they haven’t damaged the popularity of the sport one bit.

In an era when players can profit by promoting and marketing themselves, Sanders is the expert in the field. He has always been Prime. This is his time.

Jerry Rice: Deion Sanders Was My Hated Rival—and an Invaluable Teammate

His 2023 makeover of the Colorado roster via the portal resulted in an unprecedented 87 new players from the 1–11 dumpster fire he inherited. NIL opportunities helped him stun the college football world while he was coaching at Jackson State, grabbing the No. 1 recruit in the class of ’22, two-way star Travis Hunter, away from Florida State. Hunter has continued to profit from NIL—he is believed to be making seven figures per year. Shedeur followed his dad from Jackson State; he drives a Rolls-Royce, a chip off Dad’s flaunt-it block.

The marketing of the Buffaloes began soon after Sanders arrived in Boulder for his introduction as coach on Dec. 4, 2022. A production crew from the Amazon series Coach Prime followed him, just as it had documented his tenure at Jackson State, where he went 27–6 in three seasons and won new fans. But a Power 5 conference coaching job was the goal, and with it came new levels of competition and exposure—two of the central themes of Sanders’s life.

Growing up in Fort Myers, Fla., young Deion spent most of his time immersed in two things: playing sports and consuming sitcoms. His life’s work flowed from there. “I’ve always played some type of sport, always organized some type of team in the neighborhood,” he says. “When we were in elementary [school], our bus stop would play against another bus stop. We would get together, walk to their bus stop, play a game right there on the road, so we were sweaty and funky going to school. I would organize a baseball team and go get hats from the 7-Eleven so we could have a little structure.

Sanders overhauled CU’s roster—and fortunes: from 1–11 in ’22 to being ranked No. 18 in September.Greg Nelson/Sports Illustrated

“I didn’t have the ‘Prime’ nickname in youth leagues, but I’ve always been the guy who hit the home runs. I’ve always been the guy who scored the touchdowns. I’ve always been the guy who dunked and scored 30 points. I’ve always been the guy who brought people together, who broke up fights in high school. I’ve always been the guy that some people hated, some people ridiculed, some people doubted. No one just let me ride. No one gave me a pass. I’ve always attracted a judgmental crowd. That’s how God designed me. I’ve always provoked emotions.”

When he wasn’t provoking emotions, he was studying them via TV. The golden era of 1970s comedy was fertile learning ground for Sanders. “I watched a lot of television as a kid,” he says. “And I didn’t just watch television—I watched television. I studied characteristics. I studied Good Times, I studied The Jeffersons, I studied Sanford and Son, Happy Days, All in the Family. I studied the dynamics of all these different shows. What made them click? Who was the guy? Who was the costar? I just watched it like it was a game.” Sanders then went on to play a variety of roles in real life. Whether it’s acting skills or genuine charisma, he has found a way to be all things to all people. You can see in him what you want to see.

Deion Sanders: Celebrity.

In a world where many people are famous for no reason, he’s famous for abundant legitimate reasons. His combination of unparalleled athletic accomplishment with eye-catching style and a gift for oratory makes him an attention magnet. And did we mention the smile?

The number of very famous Americans who have come to Boulder just to be in Sanders’s orbit exemplifies his gravitational pull. From The Rock to an array of Hall of Fame athletes to hip-hop icons, the sidelines at Colorado home games resembled VIP seating for a Tyson-era Vegas bout. The only other time a college football program attracted this wattage of star power was USC during the Pete Carroll Heyday—maybe.

Celebrities, including Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (right), have flocked to Boulder this season.Andrew Wevers/USA TODAY Sports

Sanders has gained immense popularity and fame without an overindulgence in fakery. He does not say what people want to hear just to go along and get along. During the photo shoot for this story, one of the students in attendance yelled to Sanders, “Thanks for the follow yesterday [on social media].” Sanders’s response: “That wasn’t me, my man. My son does all that for me.” The kid didn’t seem to mind.

Deion Sanders: Authentic Man.

He’s not trying to blend into the overwhelmingly white demographic of his profession. That would be faking it. There is no small percentage of America that would prefer he just fake it and stop being so . . . Black.

“Our country’s not prepared for an African American man with this title, telling the truth,” Sanders says.

“I don’t think we’re there yet.”

Rabaka, the African American studies professor, posits that Sanders is “arguably a hip-hop head coach. He’s got the hat cocked to the side. He’s got the gold chains. He’s wearing the nicest Nikes and sweatsuits.” That’s easier to pull off at Jackson State than at a high-major program, where the established aesthetic is homogeneous—and pale. Even fellow Black coach Jay Norvell of Colorado State took a shot at Sanders for his wardrobe: “When I talk to grown-ups, I take my hat off and my glasses off. That’s what my mother taught me.”

Sanders is undeterred and has Colorado’s backing to be who he is. (What a concept in 2023.) The school loves Sanders’s persona. Boulder, white as it is but also decidedly liberal, welcomes the diversity. That has resonated nationally: The Buffaloes have been widely hailed as “Black America’s team,” as Georgetown once was in college basketball. “He’s unapologetically African American,” says Rabaka. “He speaks plainly, says it just like the brothers on the block, like the way we talk at the barbershop. We come from a culture of being expressive, we use call-and-response dialogue. Listen to him, and you hear that.”

Deion Sanders: God-Fearing Man.

If hip-hop culture isn’t your thing, Sanders can pull you in with his public espousing of religion. He is a God Squadder who refrains from swearing, peppering his sentences with durn and bull junk as replacements for cuss words—just as his legendary college coach, Bobby Bowden, did.

There is no greater example of Sanders’s cross-demographic reach than his friendships with Lil Wayne and Peggy Coppom, the lifelong fan who has become the Sister Jean of Colorado football. Coppom goes to church daily and respects Sanders’s religious nature. “I really like the fact that he’s not reluctant to express his faith in God,” she says. If there was anything Sanders did this year that could be characterized as Christianity in action, it was his peacemaker role after Colorado State safety Henry Blackburn delivered a cheap shot that led to Hunter missing 3 1/2 games with an internal injury. With Colorado fans heaping abuse on Blackburn and his family, Sanders defused the situation.

“This is still a young man trying to make it in life—a guy that’s trying to live his dream and hopefully graduate with honors or a degree, committed to excellence and go to the NFL,” Sanders said. “He does not deserve a death threat over a game.”

Deion Sanders: Old-School College Football Coach.

The perceived Hollywood culture of the program runs into a reality that insiders unanimously describe as heavy on structure. “He might have more rules than a lot of other programs,” says Chad Chatlos of TurnkeyZRG Executive Search, which handles high-profile coach and athletic director searches. “People miss on how much discipline and accountability he brings to a program.”

In the transfer-portal era, coaches are petrified of criticizing their players. Yet Sanders certainly didn’t coddle the most touted freshman on his team, defensive back Cormani McClain. When McClain wasn’t playing much early in the season, Sanders pretty much put him on blast: “Study, prepare. Be on time for meetings, show up to the durn meetings. Want to play this game, desire to play this game, desire to be the best in this game in practice, in the film room and on your own free time.”

Deion Sanders: Family Man.

Like many parents in their 50s, this is the role he cherishes most. Interaction with his kids is waning as the youngest move through college, but Sanders managed to forestall that bittersweet inevitability by going to college with them—first at Jackson State, now at Colorado. Then he brought most of the rest of the family with him to Boulder.

Coach Prime’s star pupil is his son Shedeur, who has thrown for 3,230 yards and 27 TDs in 11 games.Erick W. Rasco/Sports Illustrated

Sanders’s description of the dynamic at Colorado’s Dal Ward Athletic Center sounds like something out of a sitcom. “How in the world is this not heaven on Earth?” Sanders says in his office. “Every day, my daughter comes through that door and gives me a kiss. Every day, Shedeur comes in here and takes a shower, changes clothes, then they wash my clothes like they do and I find his underwear in my drawer—I know they’re not mine, because I know what brand I wear. Shilo sneaks up here to take a dump. Junior’s office is right next to mine. My sister [his assistant, Tracie Knight] is outside. My mother is over there watching the soap operas. My dog is right here. How in the world can I not be thankful and appreciative of where I am? They have afforded us the luxury of calling this place home, and we’ve absolutely loved it.”

As it turns out, Sanders’s agency, SMAC, and Kevin Hart’s production company are working on a sitcom based on Coach Prime’s life. It’s all coming full circle for the boy who grew up studying ’70s TV shows. He’s about to become the inspiration for one.

As for the actual football? It’s been an adventure. Colorado is massively improved over 2022, when it was by far the worst Power 5 program. The Buffaloes were outscored by 29.1 points per game last year, compared to 6.7 this year. Las Vegas set their over-under total at 3.5 wins coming into the season, and the Buffs surpassed that in early October. But there have been pratfalls. For all the acclaim Sanders has received, he’s also gotten criticism for blowing a 29-point lead to a bad Stanford team, for mismanaging the clock in a couple of games, for strangely demoting offensive coordinator Sean Lewis.

It hasn’t all been sunshine and reflector shades. “If you have 10 boxes to check, I’d say eight of them are checked,” Chatlos says. “This was a program lacking relevance, and he’s Mr. Relevant—he’s given them that. I’d say B-plus so far. The question is, how good of a football program is he building?”

That remains to be answered. What Colorado does in the portal this offseason will be a huge part of the equation, as will Shedeur’s decision on whether to enter the NFL draft. For Sanders, he has to decide whether the current joy he’s experiencing will last after his sons hang up their helmets. For Colorado, they want those luminous smiles to radiate in Boulder for a long time. “I trust him,” says athletic director Rick George.

“He feels this is his calling.”

The call has been answered. The response has been emphatic. The paradigm has been shifted. College football has never seen anything like the Prime Effect when it hit Boulder in the fall, and the sport might never be the same again.

Human Civil Rights Committee Exploratory Meeting

Please contact our colleague Abdul Jalil al-Hakim (legal@amwftrust.org) if you are interested in joining us for an exploratory meeting to assess the idea of initiating a new committee focused on an integral approach to issues related to human rights and civil rights, in the tradition of the NLG’s long standing work as a space for the strategic convergence of movements in defense of our most fundamental rights.

In doing so we are engaging in a membership drive aimed specifically to increase the membership in that Committee to include Civil Rights Lawyers, Groups and Organizations; Multi Cultural/Interfaith Religious Institutions; Unions and union members; advocates/activist; educators/students; and concerned Community members vested in the betterment of the lives of those whose Civil Rights are being compromised the greatest. Potential new associate members would apply to ALL the NATIONAL movements: Federal, State and Local, Political and Legislative, Senate and House members advocacy; Constitutional, Human and Civil rights organizations; Black Lives Matter; Defund the Police Reform; Social Justice Reform; Anti-Systemic Racism organizations; Voters Rights organizations; Immigration; Climate Justice; Healthcare; Wealth Inequality; Education; Gun Violence; Hunger and Food Insecurity; Abortion-Pro Choice Rights; LGBTQIA; School-to-Prison Pipeline; Homelessness; Abuse movements; Color of Change, James Rucker, Van Jones, Colin Kaepernick, Malcolm Jenkins, Anquan Bolden, AND ALL community-based organizations, activist, advocates, service providers, donors, volunteers, nonprofit groups, in collaboration with ALL hunger, health care, housing, violence, abuse, counseling, senior, youth, women, children, civil rights, employment, and education response agencies- to thousands of men, women and children living in San Francisco/ Oakland Bay Area in California to help transform NOT JUST the lives of people in need, BUT ALL PEOPLE.

There was once a time back in the late 1960’s and 1970’s where the NLG, specifically in the Bay Area, LEAD THE WORLD in the fight for Civil Rights with so many GREAT lawyers whose strategy, tactics and style was not only imitated, but taught as a tool for success!

With Roe v Wade Women’s Rights overturned; George Floyd Police Reform Bill stalled; John Lewis Voter Rights Bill locked out with counter laws to deny equal voting rights surging across the country; LGBTQ rights headed for reversal; Immigration Bills ended; DACA Act denied; Enviornmental, Criminal, Prison and Social Justice reforms disbanded; WITH ALL HUMAN AND CIVIL RIGHTS UNDER ATTACK, WHEREIN AMERICAN SOCIETY HAS BEEN SET BACK OVER 100 YEARS, URGENCY IS AN UNDERSTATEMENT.

This illustrates that ALL CIVIL RIGHTS are under sever threat of being rolled back 100 years!, Unless and until there is complete Judicial Reform revoking immunity for Judges, Police and Prosecutors to END Grand Systemic and Endemic Corruption, that maintains and continues the Jim Crow administration of justice serving White Class and Privileged Bias, YOUR LIVES, BLACK LIVES, ALL LIVES DON’T MATTER!

The dramatic long standing effects of the Jim Crow administration of justice is characterized by tyrannical Federal, State, and Local Governments; Corrupt Federal, State, and Local Government Judicial and Law Enforcement Agencies; Rampant Fraud and Corruption; Class, Race and Caste Societal Wars; Dehumanization of the Minority and Poor Masses; Financial Collapse; Famine, Disease; Food Insecurity; Affordable Housing Drought; Sky Rocketing Unemployment; Social Unrest; Environmental Disaster; other characteristics representative of a Cataclysmic Decline in Society as the Rich Top 2% Just Get Richer at everyone else’s expense!!

With the WHOLE WORLD protesting the reversal of Roe v Wade and the integrity, or lack thereof, of the Supreme and lower Courts, this is a HUMAN concern that will only grow in importance everyday!

Pro-Democracy Human Civil Rights policy leaders around the world, have a very difficult challenge.

This is not a regular challenge, nor traditional contest of the kind you and I have ever had in the past, deciding whether we should have this kind of legal Human Civil Rights policy for a movement or that kind of Human Civil Rights policy for a movement. Our society has become increasingly a contest between liberal democracy — continued and expanded liberal democracy against fascism, political violence, illiberalism.

We are fighting against forces that want to and are increasingly gaining control over our ability to have a Human Civil Rights policy be something that can be thrown out with elections if they don’t like the results or answer they get.

If you are in the position of being in the pro-democracy, Human Civil Rights movement, here is your challenge. On the one hand, you have to call out those threats to pro-democracy, to Human Civil Rights, because it’s incredibly important to do so. You have to be outraged because you should be outraged. But if that is all you are offering, you are NOT effectively providing Human Civil Rights policy for any effective solutions, much less a movement! YOU ARE NOT meeting those MOST in need, nor voters where they are in the concerns that they have in the lived terrain of their lives.

The challenge for pro-democracy forces effectively providing Human Civil Rights policy with any effective solutions, and a movement is, how can our pro-democracy forces beat back this threat of authoritarianism- fascism, political violence, illiberalism? Not simply by condemning it, which people have gotten very good at, but actually, outcompeting it.

Outcompeting it for hearts and minds. Outcompeting it so that those MOST in need feel their cause is more immediate to ALL peoples’ lives than fascism and authoritarianism does. Those MOST in need FEEL more exuberant and transcendent than fascism and authoritarianism does. Offers more belonging than fascism and authoritarianism does. It offers more of effective ANSWERS, SOLUTIONS, RESOLUTIONS of their legal Human Civil Rights bewilderment and confusion in a confusing age than fascism and authoritarianism does.

Right now, the pro-democracy movement is not succeeding, I would even argue LOSING GROUND, at outcompeting fascism. I am making a plea having spent the last 50 years studying, working on the ground developing a formula that we learn from the Bay Area’s glorious past being LEADERS in the pro-democracy, Human Civil Rights policy movement to beat back this authoritarian tide.

The American midterms had two very distinct systems of democracy and illiberal competing against each other. And I’m not just throwing that out. The majority of the Republican candidates ran on the platform are all election deniers, democracy deniers. That’s an actual fact.

As the election neared, we saw that the latest polls showed in the congressional ballot that the average support for both Democratic candidates and Republican candidates was at about 46 percent. In other words, they’re just about tied in this point. Which is a little different than what we heard a couple of months ago. We heard a couple of months ago that the stories of hope, the stories of democracy working, the stories of legislation were beginning to show up for the Democrats. But that faded out.

Where do WE go from here?

YOU CAN LEAD THE WAY!!

Respectfully,

Abdul-Jalil

NEED LEGAL COUNSEL FOR PROTECTION OF THE HOMELESS/NEEDY FROM THE Pandemic Scammers- Social Service Providers/Agencies- POVERTY PIMPS – “Scamdemers“

We are recommending an Investigation and Forensic Audit of the “Scamdemers“

We, the Aaron & Margaret Wallace Foundation (AMWF) are looking for legal Counsel to provide legal services to Seniors, mentally compromised, the housing marginalized/Homeless, disabled, medically challenged, the indigent, immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ-gender, religious minorities, ethnic minorities, people of color, youth that are aged out of foster care/adoption, emancipated youth, minorities of ALL persuasions, whom have been set up to have their housing denied and, in some cases, put back on the street for no reason other than we have caught their “Scamdemic service providers” in multiple, extremely racist and bigoted instances of discrimination and persecution in the processing of housing applications and even having government law enforcement agencies involved as a silent third-party in doing so! These Scamdemic agencies are raking in multi-million dollars a year and providing substandard services, with improperly and untrained employees that is costing ALL PARTIES millions in WASTE as well! The Scamdemers have tried to abuse many of them so badly that they would just leave the programs and go back to the streets, freeway underpasses, etc.!

We sought out our partners at the National Lawyers Guild- San Francisco Bay Area (NLG-SFBA), but there was no one qualified that responded.

The Aaron & Margaret Wallace Foundation (AMWF), is a 65 year old, 501C3 non-profit, public services organization based on GIVING AND SHARING, is non-denominational, Multi-Cultural, 100% volunteer financed and operated relief organization that provides FREE charitable assistance to the general public with food, medicine, clothing, educational and employment opportunities, mental and physical health referrals, legal aid, shelter and other necessities to individuals, children, families, and organizations who lack these essentials for any reason. We provide private school and college admissions educational opportunities; assists with referrals for job training and placement; rental assistance; social services assistance; homelessness assistance; mental and physical health assistance; medical assistance and legal aid assistance referrals FREE for ANYONE whom has the need.

AMWF is especially concerned about the most vulnerable people in the community and extends these various services and programs to the economically, mentally, and physically challenged; the poor and homeless; the undereducated and undeserved; people living with symptomatic HIV and AIDS; substance abuse; seniors 55 years and older; prenatal women; at risk youth; shut-in and homebound people living with serious illness; people with compromised immune systems, low-wage workers, and undocumented people. We have multiple efforts to support organizations and communities responding to the impact of COVID-19 in racial bias, worker protection, homelessness, renter protection, housing insecurity, and food security and the needs of low-income communities, particularly the impacts for communities of color, related to COVID-19.

As the COVID-19 pandemic has driven unprecedented surges in demand for food assistance, AMWF’s food network brings together different groups, organizations, and agencies that work with the poor and needy has always had one of the best ever business models combines our food procurement with our established innovative food redistribution hub, serves a network for other hunger-relief organizations to provide more effective hunger-relief efforts in the Bay Area.

We are committed to greater racial and economic equity in the Bay Area and want to ensure that people of color and low-income people are (1) food, basic needs and economically secure, (2) remain in their rooted neighborhood communities, and (3) vigorously engage in social, civic, and just legal life and part of the inclusive Democracy!

We provide FREE groceries, clothing, shoes, hygiene kits, sleeping bags, blankets, medicine, and hot chef’s prepared gourmet meals to the homeless and homeless encampments and habitations of ALL kinds, from the streets to parks, from trees and bushes to alleys, from corners to ditches, from hand built shanties to tents under freeway overpasses!

We are contacting you today in hopes that you may be able to assist us with the housing marginalized individuals and families that are subjected to the “selective persecution” that goes along with the hate induced racism, bigotry, persecution, bias, prejudice and sheer terror that those in charge of the multi-million dollar “house the homeless Scamdemic” so willingly and viciously FORCE upon the helpless!

The housing marginalized/homeless “LIVE- (if I can refer to it as living)” daily with numerous Federal and State sponsored crimes that violate EVERY CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, and the Federal and California State CONSTITUTIONS getting the worst treatment you could imagine, that’s EXTREMELY inhumane because they feel entitled to invoke racism, bigotry, harassment, and persecution upon them, as being homeless, no one cares, no one is going to protect them and it’s escalating with the lies, deception, and fraud that now is common place in ALL their interactions as these “Scamdemers” are clearly acting in concert with each other!
They, the poverty pimp “Scamdemers”, can manipulate the system anyway they chose since no one is really watching to hold them accountable, it’s largely unregulated, and the clients they are supposed to serve are unknown- invisible to society as people, but exist only as human blight and vermin in their respective privileged neighborhoods destined to be extracted- BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY!
The housing marginalized/homeless are subjected to these unbridled attacks because the service agencies are “the only game in town”! It’s their game, their ball, their court, they own the league and operate it unencumbered and un-policed! It’s truly the Wild, Wild West, and they have ALL the guns and ammunition!

These “Scamdemers” operate in conjunction with and in many capacities Executives, Directors, Housing Commissions, Housing Authorities in the commission of numerous Federal and State crimes that violate EVERY CIVIL RIGHTS ACT, the CONSTITUTION AND ALL BASIC HUMAN RIGHTS!

To quote just TWO instances:

1) “Your ILLEGAL, INHUMAN tactics including the HATE, multiple threats, sheer TERROR, intimidation, and harassment forced on them with the intent to inflict the maximum pain and suffering on them, while you engaged in CRIMINAL FRAUD AND CONCEALMENT AS YOU HAD THE X DOCUMENT AND WAS AWARE OF IT’S CONTENTS ALL THE TIME! To enact your strategy, you needed them to produce it to conceal the fact that you already had it! These are Federal and State crimes of Hate, and violations of EVERY CIVIL RIGHTS ACT and the CONSTITUTION!”

2) “your using this weaponized process to further your agenda of persecution while committing Hate Crimes, Terror, Civil Conspiracy, Islamophobia, Xenophobia, Hate Induced Bigotry, Vindictive Retaliation, Oppression, Harassment, Racism, Bias, Prejudice, Unfairness, Persecution, AND GRAND CORRUPTION!”

There have been several attempts with law enforcement to “frame” their clients for fraud the Scamdemers were committing in their clients name with the intent to entrapment them in the charge! It has backfired many times, BUT IS STILL ACTIVE!

The Scamdemers even tried to abuse the law by making excessive, unrelated DEMANDS for legally protected- private and personal unrelated information that they had NO RIGHT to in furtherance of their agenda. Two examples:

1) If there are any other legal requirements for any other documents, as we said before, PLEASE PROVIDE THE DOCUMENTED LEGAL REFERENCE FOR IT AS IT WOULD ALSO INCLUDE WHAT DOCUMENTS SATISFY THAT REQUIREMENT. The scamdemers has REPEATEDLY failed and refused to do so on ALL previous requests for the substantiation of the request (demand). This appears to be another ruse to provoke and aggrieve them in your entrapment strategy.

2) “We all have agreed that your and others at XXX admitted continuing collective and coordinated efforts to ensure X’s  frustration, and dissatisfaction has been duly noted, as we are well experienced in recognizing and negating these “Target, Engagement, Harassment, Provocation, Litigation” tactics as a part of the larger “Entrapment” strategy and the reference to consult your “others” in this matter as well.”

The Scamdemers admissions evenbrings into play their use of “others” and their roles in this continuing saga that should be about their clients housing and well being- NOT an “Entrapment”.
Their use of “others” compromises their “cover” and implies that they and/or the “others” are or maybe under and working with a government Special Services Division, with or as confidential informants, snitches, government operatives, are authorized to engage in illegal activity and acts that would be unlawful if performed by an actual FBI agent such as entrapment by “participating in an act that constitutes an obstruction of justice (e.g. perjury, witness tampering, witness intimidation, entrapment, or the fabrication, alteration, or destruction of evidence),” or to “initiate a plan or strategy to commit a federal, state, or local offense,” they provide a number of conditions under which “an inducement to an individual to engage in crime is authorized.”
These confidential informants, snitches, government operatives can provide a number of conditions under which “an inducement to an individual to engage in crime is authorized.” This could apply to any or all of the actions taken in and of their services as a “quasi- governmental” agency acting in their clients name and stead.

The Scamdemers constant hostility, harassment, oppressive, onerous criminal corruption and persecution to the detriment of those most in need with their adversarial actions appears to be more a continuing ruse to provoke them with their racial and religious biases and aggrieve them in their entrapment strategy.

The Scamdemers are ALL legal parties as Governmental and Quasi-governmental employees, agents, contractors, entities, associates, members, and contractors of their companies, the U. S. Federal Government, State of California, County, and cities, among others, have engaged in unethical and criminal means, instigated and encouraged said acts, which gives rise to fraudulent, corruption as the Scamdemers conspired, consorted, colluded, conceived, employed and enacted the criminal, tactical, hate crime inspired policy of TARGETED HATE CRIME, Terror, Civil Conspiracy, Islamophobia, Xenophobia, Hate Induced Bigotry, Vindictive Retaliation, Oppression, Harassment, Racism, Discrimination, Bias, Prejudice, Unfairness, Persecution, AND GRAND CORRUPTION, victimization, inciting acrimony, animus, in the continued persecution with calumny deceit and the attempted entrapment of them as the continuing “TARGET”.

ALL the Scamdemers DOCUMENTED actions alleged include violations of the First, Fifth, Sixth and Fourteenth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, Unruh and Ralph Civil Rights Acts, and the Bane Acts, Equal Protection under 42 U.S.C. ß 1983, California Constitution, Article VI, § 4 1/2; California Code of Civil Procedure §§ 355, 356, 473, 475, 3523, and 3528, and for Harassment, Censorship, Fraud, Negligence, Misrepresentation, Abuse of Process, Breach of Contract, Breach of the Covenant of Good Faith and Fair Dealing, Breach of Express Warranty, Breach of Implied Warranty, Breach of Contract/Common Law Warranty, Deceptive Trade Practices, Intentional Misrepresentation, Negligent Misrepresentation, Fraud by Concealment, California’s Unfair Competition Law, Cal Bus & Prof Code §§ 17200 et seq, Intentional Infliction of Emotional Distress, Discrimination in Violation of the Unruh Act, Nuisance, Abuse of Process, Fraud by Concealment, Violation of California False Advertising Law, Violation of California Consumers Legal Remedies Act (CLRA), Breach of Implied Warranty, Deceit-(California Civil Code § 1710), Unfair and Deceptive Business Practices, Unconscionability (UDAP), Elder Abuse.
Given the FRAUD, ADMITTED LIES AND DECEPTION, THEFT, FABRICATION OF DOCUMENTS, ETC., this could easily be “a plan or strategy to commit a federal, state, or local offense” in the “entrapped” clients name, under the guise of “an inducement to an individual to engage in crime is authorized.”

Here again they are admitting their entrapment strategy and their involving unknown “third parties” that are directing their actions in this admitted attempt at fraud.
Can you PLEASE give them some guidance and representation, or perhaps direct us to someone that can if you can’t help them? We will await your communication.

Sincerely,

A. J.

Abdul-Jalil, Superstar Management worked PRIVATE EVENTS for members of Saudi Arabian Royal Family

Dr. Khalid Abdullah Tariq Al-Mansour
international law firm of Al-Waleed, Al-Talal and Al-Mansour (1964- )
Special Advisor to: HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulazziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia

THE RAISING OF OBAMA WORLD HISTORY!! BLACK HISTORY!!

Al-Mansour, Prince Al-Waleed and the Raising of President Barak Obama from Khalid Al-Monsour, Abdul-Jalil and “BAD BLACK EXPO” HISTORICAL SUCCESS!
Khalid Al-Monsour spoke at the “Black Awareness Day (BAD), Black Expo”, known as “BAD BLACK EXPO” and many other venues around the Bay Area and the WORLD with Abdul-Jalil and SUPERSTAR MANAGEMENT!

Al-Mansour, Prince Al-Waleed and the Raising of President Barak Obama

Abdul-Jalil and Superstar Management has worked in PRIVATE EVENTS with several members of the Saudi Arabian Royal family including His Royal Highness (HRH) Prince Al Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulazziz Al-Saud and his son His Royal Highness Prince Khaled bin Al Waleed bin Talal of Saudi Arabia.
Al Waleed bin Talal Al Saud is a Saudi Arabian billionaire businessman, investor, philanthropist and Royal. He was listed on Time magazine’s Time 100, an annual list of the hundred most influential people in the world, and the fifth-richest man in the world, with a net worth of nearly $50 billion! Al Waleed bin Talal’s grandfather was Saudi Arabia’s founding monarch.
Al Waleed is the founder, chief executive officer and 95 percent owner of the Kingdom Holding Company, a company that spans four continents with investments in companies in the financial services, tourism and hospitality, mass media, entertainment, retail, agriculture, petrochemicals, aviation, technology, and real-estate sectors. In 2013, the company had a market capitalization of over $28 billion. Over the years, he has acquired major stakes in companies such as Citigroup Inc. to the Four Seasons luxury hotel chain, Apple Computer Inc., AOL Time Warner Inc., News Corp., Saks Inc.- parent of retailer Saks Fifth Avenue and owns the Disney company’s Paris resort- Euro Disneyland Paris and its sister park, Walt Disney Studios, a minor shareholder in Zaveriwala Holdings LLC, and owns Paris’ Four Seasons Hotel George V and part of New York’s Plaza Hotel. Time has called him the “Arabian Warren Buffett”.  Forbes listed Al Waleed as the 4th-richest man in the world with a net worth of $49.8 billion in 2020.
Two of Abdul Jalil and Superstar Managements long time business associates since 1968 are attorney Donald Warden with his law firm of Holmes & Warden, and partner Roger C. Holmes.
Dr. Khalid Abdullah Tariq Al-Mansour formerly known as Donald Warden with Holmes, who later took the name Dr. Faissal Mohammed Fahad, were representing HRH Prince Al-Waleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulazziz Al-Saud of Saudi Arabia in a court case in California. Al-Mansour would become Special Advisor to HRH Prince Al-Waleed.
Abdul-Jalil introduced his client M. C. Hammer to Al-Monsour and Al-Waleed and arranged a week long event in Paris, France, for Al-Waleed at his Paris resort- Euro Disneyland Paris and its sister park, Walt Disney Studios. Abdul-Jalil also made the introduction of Al-Waleed’s son Prince Khaled bin Al-Waleed bin Talal, also known as Abu Jenna in the business world, a very successful businessman in his own right.
Prince Al-Waleed (the world’s 19th riches person at the time), was a student at Menlo College in California, asked Donald Warden/Al-Mansour to go home with him to Riyadh. The Royal Family and was upset because OPEC was being sued. The Saudi King asked that Donald Warden/Al-Mansour to ”take the case” and they began legal representation defending OPEC in court.
Al-Mansour, as the “formal” attorney for OPEC, employed the tactic of threatening, then engaged in an oil embargo by the OPEC nations in response to a lawsuit filed against them. The threat of reprisals also included withdrawal of funds on deposit with American banks. The antitrust lawsuit had been filed in December 1978 by the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers in federal court in Los Angeles, and the decision was announced in September at 477 F.Supp. 553 (1979). It is fascinating to note that another attorney who wrote a brief on behalf of Indonesia-U.S. Business Committee of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry was Antonin Scalia, then a professor at the University of Chicago, years before he was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1986.
Warden/Al-Mansour won the OPEC case and was Cited by Federal Judge Andrew Hauk for the Clarence Darrow Award as lead attorney in the famous IAM vs. OPEC trial (1978).
Thereafter the Prince asked Al-Mansour to accompany him around Africa and help him invest there in order to “build Africa up”.  Al-Mansour knew many of the Presidents in Africa and made the introductions to the Prince.
They then founded the international law firm of Al-Waleed, Al-Talal and Al-Mansour.

Al-Mansour and Prince Al-Waleed raising of President Barak Obama

Al-Mansour took an interest in Barak Obama when they met up during one of Al-Mansur’s speeches at Columbia. As Percy Sutton told NY1 reporter Dominic Carter on the show “Inside City Hall”, “I was introduced to (Obama) by a friend who was raising money for him.” He asked Sutton to write a letter in support of Obama’s application to Harvard Law School.
“The friend’s name is Dr. Khalid al-Mansour, from Texas,” Sutton said. “He is the principal adviser to one of the world’s richest men. He told me about Obama.”
Sutton recalled that al-Mansour said that “there is a young man that has applied to Harvard. I know that you have a few friends up there because you used to go up there to speak. Would you please write a letter in support of him?” Sutton did.
Sutton revealed that it was Al-Mansour (from San Antonio, Texas) who raised the money to pay for Obama’s education at Harvard when Obama was 25 years old.
So, Obama graduated from Columbia University in New York,  spent a time as a community organizer in Chicago, met Al-Mansour and headed off to Harvard. Obama arrived unknown, but left with having had national news media exposure, a book contract… and, having been the Editor of the Law Review on his resumé.  He graduated Magnum Cum Laude.
One of Obama’s patron’s was Prince Al-Waleed, now the world’s fourth richest man. Shortly before Obama entered Harvard Law, Al-Waleed donated twenty million dollars to Harvard. Five or six years later Al-Waleed created the “Al-Waleed bin-Talal Center for Islamic Studies” at Harvard Divinity School, its best-funded division. At about the same time Al-Waleed opened similar centers at Georgetown, Cambridge, American University, and many other major Universities.
September 19, 1995, 34 year-old Barack Obama announced his candidacy for Illinois’s State Senate. One of his opponents was first-time candidate Gha-is Askia. During his campaign, Abdul-Jalil consulted Askia and his client, M. C. Hammer supported a community event Askia sponsored while doing a series of TV/radio/media appearances in Chicago for his album promotion tour.
Abdul-Jalil and Askia partnered to bring Muhammad Ali and his wife Lonnie to San Francisco on November 5, 1995 for “The Sports Image Awards”, an event Abdul-Jalil Sponsored, to Honor Ali with the “Lifetime Achievement Award”.
The Sports Image Awards- “A Night to Remember!”, sought to single out and honor those in sports who have dedicated effort, time and money to better their community, the nation, and the World. Those honored, we feel, are a part of a long line of athletes that back to the great Paul Robeson, who matched dignity with dollars. Those who use sports for it’s highest and most noble purpose, the uplifting of the Human Family.
Also being honored were Venus Williams, Carl Lewis, Steve Young, Al Attles, Dave Stewart, Peter Westbrook. Hammer was the Featured Entertainer. The program included Founder- Martin Wyatt, Master of Ceremonies- Mark Curry, Music Director- Narada Michael Walden, Recording Artist- Color Me Badd, Touch of Class Choir, Clarence Clemmons, Nikita Germaine. Lisa DeBartolo- 49er Foundation and Dennis Banks presented and received Special Presentations.
Obama had been a grassroots organizer in this gritty neighborhood, registering thousands to vote before going off to Harvard Law School. He came back to Chicago, to work as a lawyer and saw a chance to run for state Senate. But in his first race for office he made sure Democratic voters had just one choice. Him.
ALL Obama’s opponents were kicked off that ballot before a single vote was cast. How? Obama sent a team of lawyers and volunteers to the Chicago Board of Elections, and challenged the petitions of his opponents. You needed 757 signatures of registered voters to become a candidate. Askia gathered 1,999. But when the Obama team was through challenging his signatures, addresses and voter registrations, Askia came up 69 signatures short.
THE REST, AS THEY SAY, IS HISTORY!!
WORLD HISTORY!!
BLACK HISTORY!!

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

On September 19, 2022, Belal Salih Esa was one of two gunshot victims at 31st Street and Telegraph Avenue about 7:45 p.m. that night, inside Layalina, a Middle-Eastern pizza restaurant that died on the scene right around the corner from a mosque where they had been praying just 45 minutes beforehand. The Oakland Islamic Center is around the corner from the shooting scene where the men had been attending their evening prayers at around sundown or 7 p.m.

Surveillance video from the store and restaurant that were involved, shows a white vehicle, possibly a Prius, pulling up and someone started shooting into the store and restaurant. Police are reviewing that footage, but did not confirm any suspect vehicle information.

Belal was on the Board of Directors of the Oakland Islamic Center and his family operated several businesses and performed Charity with the Aaron & Margaret Wallace Foundation (AMWF) Jumaah Free Farmers Markets in the African and Middle Eastern Muslim communities and at several Eat Bay Masajids on Jumaah Friday Kuthbah. Belal, Ethiopian by birth, worked tirelessly to better the African and Muslim communities in the Bay Area, where he singularly fed thousands in 9 Free Food Ministries each week with our AMWF Free Food Program, AHDL!

He is survived by his wife Mimi, sons Dawude- graduated from U. C. Berkeley with a triple major, Omar- also graduated from U. C. Berkeley, Salih- 15 year old entrepreneur at the top of his class entering high school, and daughter Rewda- the smartest of them all!

We couldn’t have done ANYTHING without your support, AHDL!! May ALLAH accept your good deeds and fasts, and grant you and your families duas, Salaahs, forgiveness and REWARD YOU and your Families with Jannatul Firdaus in paradise directly under his throne, iA! Shukran wa Jazzak Allah Khair Khayrun

This will stick with them for LIVES! We are and have been heavily involved in servicing the Homeless for over 50 years, that suddenly the government needed to address as a potential Deadly agent of the spread of the virus. ALL our work Tripled up to the time they were unceremoniously dismissed!
We ALL have had to face and address the devastating effect the Pandemic has had on the WORLD! We hurried and struggled to find solutions that could slow- at the very least, the surge of Covid and it’s disastrous multiplying deadly force.
We learned that many things we thought were true and accurate simply were NOT! We learned that many things we were told was true and accurate simply were NOT!
We learned that many things we thought we knew, we simply did NOT!
We learned that vaccinations are many things we thought, BUT simply NOT a CURE!
As a front line “essential worker”, we saw FIRST HAND, the consequences of ALL the actions and inactions taken, the many things that were done that should NOT have been done, AND, the many things that were NOT done that should have been done!
Foremost among those of US on the front line in the worst conditions supporting those MOST at risk- the unhoused, we lived in real-time the absolute FEAR that gripped those in the “wild”!
One of the GREATEST issues that consumed our emotions was the incessant open display of MAN’S INHUMANITY TOWARD MAN!
We are ALWAYS operating with the reminder that tomorrow is NOT promised, no matter how much you do in the service of man for God! We have had several people that were killed while serving food to the less fortunate.
YOU WILL NEVER KNOW ALL THE BATTLES HE/WE HAVE HAD TO FIGHT WITH THE RACISM, BIGOTRY, ISLAMOPHOBIA, XENOPHOBIA, AND PURE HATE THAT WE ENCOUNTER BEING THE ONLY AFRICAN-AMERICAN, MUSLIM FOOD BANK! I will address that at a later
date.

We will ALWAYS make HONEST, SINCERE, DEDICATED EFFORTS IN SUPPORT OF OUR SELF PROFESSED COMMITMENT in combating the centuries long INJUSTICE with our work to put an end to HUMAN/CIVIL Rights, economic injustice, real and personal property poverty; physical and mental oppression and brutality; to racism, and inequities where so many shocked and outraged people around the world have found it in their own DNA
as humans to oppose this historical display of systemic and endemic injustice that enables discrimination and protects the violation of human rights.

THEY/WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT!!

At this time we are asking YOU to be available to support our communities very lifelines!
